Ushijima Noriyuki - Born in Kumamoto, Ushijima Noriyuki studied Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1928. He worked primarily as a painter until WWII, when he began creating woodblocks. He received the prestigious Order of Cultural Merit in 1983.
