Scene from Motomishi Hana Bunbu no Noriwake, 1856

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Motomishi Hana Bunbu no Noriwake." At right, the samurai Akamatsu Taro Masanori threatens Yamada's daughter Chiyogiku kneeling before him. He grips a sword over his shoulder as he glares down at her, wearing an unusual black fur robe trimmed with fringe. The beauty turns away in fright, holding her sleeve up before her as she scrambles backwards. At upper left, Shizunome Kobai wield a sickle attached to a chain, raising the weapon above her head with one hand as the samurai Ashikaga Yoshitsugi knees below, preparing to draw his sword. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro II, Nakamura Fukusuke I, Kataoka Ainosuke III, and Ichikawa Danzo VI. Great expressive figure with fine detail in the clothing and soft shading on the dark night sky.
