Iwai Kumesaburo III as Shinzo Izayoi, 1859

Comments - Attractive kabuki portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III as the geisha Shinzo Izayoi in the play "Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui," a tale about the priest Seishin, who is banished after his lover affair with the geisha Izayoi is discovered. Here, she smiles happily as she looks back over her shoulder, the edge of the cloth draped over her head caught between her teeth. She wears a red floral kimono bordered with a blue and gray striped pattern over a red under robe, tied with a blue tie-dyed obi that reverses to black. Rain begins to fall, a few drops slanting across the evening sky. A sweetly expressive figure.
