Comments - Terrific scene of samurai arriving for an audience with the Shogun Ashikaga Takauji, the founder and first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, just before his fleet sets out for war. The shogun sits on a platform in a separate room at far right, the entrance area below him lined with noblemen in formal court dress. A small page carries an offering tray with a poem slip on it across the room toward four samurai in armor kneeling at the foot of the verandah. The palace overlooks a view of the harbor crowded with warships, their sails marked with the mon or family crest of each clan. Smaller boats are lined up along the shore, with warriors embarking by ramps. The scene is a veiled reference to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's fleet setting sail to invade Korea. A great panoramic view of this ceremony, with excellent detail and attractive color, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
