A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Nihonbashi: Fish Market, Toy Footman, 1854 - Terrific design from a Tokaido series jointly designed by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III between 1854 - 1857. Hiroshige created the landscape backgrounds while Toyokuni III designed the large figures in the foreground. This charming scene shows a beauty and a young boy playing with a toy figure of a yakko or footman carrying a tall standard. The child grins happily as he looks up, the woman returning his smile. She wears a blue kimono patterned with birds floating on water, tied with a brown floral obi. Hiroshige's landscape above shows a view of the Nihon Bridge framed by the pilings of another bridge, the water busy with boats carrying cargo up and down the Sumida River. Nicely detailed with soft shading in the water and sky. A lovely subject. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
