Reports of the Korean Incident: Violent Battle of the Insurgents, 1882

Comments - Dramatic depiction of the Korean uprising known as the Imo Incident, which took place on July 23, 1882. Some Korean military units revolted, attacking government officials and Japanese military advisors and diplomats. In the center, the Japanese minister to Korea, Hanabusa Yoshitada, and his aides are shown making their escape away from the rioting soldiers and mob at left. Gripping his sword, Yoshitada gestures for his men to follow him across a rushing stream beneath a waterfall, where others await them on the far shore. At left, a bloodied Japanese soldier leans heavily on his sword as he points at the fighting behind them. In the distance at left, smoke and flames rise from burning buildings beyond the mountains. A fantastic depiction of this historic event, beautifully drawn and detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and a dusting of mica across the night sky. A fascinating subject for a student of military history.
