Amusements at the House of the Golden Vase, 1868

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting the courtesans of the House of the Golden Vase enjoying a variety of amusements in their free time. At left, a woman trims a flower stem with a pair of scissors as she arranges flowers in a low vase on a stand. In the center, a beauty plays the koto while her standing companion fingers a shakuhachi flute. At right, a group of women write poems slips and paint verses on fans. The modern establishment includes glass windows, rendered with a soft blue tint, and an ornate lantern decorated with beads and tassels. A terrific design with wonderful color and a wealth of detail, including touches of burnishing. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
