Bando Takesaburo I as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, 1849

Comments - Handsome portrait of Bando Takesaburo I as Minamoto no Yoshitsune in the play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). In the drama, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attempt to sneak across the border disguised as monks to evade his brother, Yoritomo. Here, Yoshitsune sits meekly after they are stopped at the border for questioning, looking up with a wary expression. He holds a woven black hat and a walking stick, a portable shrine on the floor behind him. Yellow panels decorated with bamboo and pine trees line the back of the room. Nicely detailed.
