The Loyal Masaoka, Wet Nurse to the Date Clan, 1881 - Terrific illustration based on the true story of efforts to overthrow the Date family in the northern town of Sendai in the 16th century. Masaoka was the wet nurse in charge of the family heir, a young boy about the same age as her son. Enemies had a tray of poisoned candy delivered in an attempt to assassinate the heir. Trained to taste the heir's food, Masaoka's own son ran forward and ate a sweet, dying instantly. Masaoka cradles the child's lifeless body in her arms, raising her face to the sky in quiet grief, the overturned tray of sweets at her feet. A moving, emotional scene from this famous story. Wonderful detail in the elegant kimono fabrics and household furnishings. Includes lacquer on the black stand of the vase.
