Yoshitsune in Danger at Mt. Yoshino, 1885 - Terrific kabuki depiction of the warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune at Yoshino Temple on Mt. Yoshino. Yoshitsune is in danger of being attacked by the warrior monk Kakuhan and his men, who appear on the snow cliff at upper left, looking for their target. Here, the loyal retainer Sato Tadanobu kneels before his master, offering to trade his armor with Yoshitsune to allow him to escape. Tadanobu will wear disguise himself in Yoshitsune's armor to confront Kakuhan. The other samurai gather around, their straw raincoats covered with snow. The actors include Onoe Kikugoro V as Yoshitsune and Ichikawa Sadanji I as Sato Tadanobu. The red temple building features beautiful carved panels and doors, the scene framed by a pine tree at right. A great design with lively color and fine detail. A rarely seen Chikanobu subject.
