Sukeroku: Cherry Blossoming Viewing Time in the District, 1855 - Terrific scene from the play commonly known as "Sukeroku," which tells the story of a street knight named Sukeroku, who is actually Soga Goro in disguise. Here, Sukeroku stands outside the Miruraya Teahouse, where he has come to visit his sweetheart, the beautiful courtesan Agemaki. He and the elderly samurai Ikyu argue over the beautiful courtesan Agemaki, with whom they are both in love. Holding his umbrella high, Sukeroku frowns insolently at Ikyu, who scowls back at him. At left, Agemaki looks up with a smile, wearing a kimono patterned with a carp leaping up a waterfall and a black obi decorated with the "takaramono" or precious things. Her kamuro or child apprentice waits at her side, holding a battledore adorned with the portrait of an actor. Blossoming cherry trees frame the scene above. A beautiful design with a wonderfully detailed setting. Includes burnishing on the black kimono, the black obi, and the black geta clogs, and embossing on Ikyu's white hair and beard.
