Young Lovers across a River, 1894 - Wonderful triptych illustrating a scene from the kabuki play "Imoseyama onna teikin," which tells the story of a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals. Each family owns an estate on opposite sides of the Yoshino River, which rushes through the center of the scene. The young samurai Koganosuke and the beauty Hinadori decide that they would rather commit suicide together than be separated by their families. Here, they exchange glances from their separate verandahs as their parents out blossoming cherry branches, to be tossed in the river as a symbol of their intentions. From left to right, the actors are Nakamura [?], Onoe Kikugoro V, Nakamura Eisaburo, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Nakamura Fukusuke. A handsome scene with lively color.
