Miya by Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869)

Original Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869) Japanese Woodblock Print
Miya

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, 1865

Hiroshige II's Tokaido Road - In 1865, Hiroshige II created a vertical "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road" series. Like his master Hiroshige, Hiroshige II focused on life on the Tokaido Road and the experiences of travelers passing along this famous route. Majestic landscapes provide a backdrop for beauties and samurai, pilgrims and peasants, crossing streams, passing fields, or stopping in small villages to rest and relax during the journey. This appears to be a later edition with the signature block "Rissho" replaced with "Hiroshige" and a greenish border instead of yellow. Some stations also have alternate designs, perhaps because blocks were lost or damaged.
