Comments - Dramatic depiction of a battle from the historic epic "The Taiheiki," which detailed the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts. In the foreground, a warrior on horseback easily flings an enemy overhead with one hand while simultaneously slicing another attacker with his sword in passing. The fight continues all around on horseback and on foot, a tangled confusion of spears, swords, armor and banners. On a hilltop at upper right, troops break through the tent walls of an encampment, thrusting spears at a general seated on a folding stool. Additional troops can be seen approaching beyond the mountains at left, their banners and standards fluttering in procession. A great lively scene, nicely detailed.
