Comments - Dramatic scene of two guards trying to capture Marubashi Chuya, who is wanted for planning an attack on Edo Castle to overthrow the Shogun. He perches atop a well in the center, gripping a bucket of water in one hand and waving a sword in the other. The policeman strikes at him with a pole arm, hitting the bucket and sending a cascade of water splashing out. Wearing a blue and white cotton summer kimono, the commoner glares at him with furrowed brows, his long hair flowing over his shoulders. At right, a Chuya's wife Osetsu watches with a worried expression as she holds a scroll that has been set on fire, red flames and embers rising from the paper. The dark blue night sky adds to the drama, setting off the figures. Ichikawa Sadanji plays Marubashi Chuya and Bando Shucho appears at Osetsu. A fascinating kabuki triptych, the large figures wonderfully detailed with fine line work in the hair and expressive faces.
