The Great Earthquake at Momoyama Palace in Fushimi, 1883 - Terrific illustration of the aftermath of the great earthquake at Fushimi in 1596. The temblor destroyed Momoyama Castle, also known as Fushimi Castle, which was built only a few years earlier by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In this scene, a nobleman and the ladies of the palace take refuge in a temporary encampment, the landscape behind them strewn with boulders and orange smoke from a fire billowing into the night sky in the distance. Some of the women cower behind their hands in alarm, with one hiding her face on the ground. A messenger kneels at right, reporting the news. A dramatic illustration of this historic event, with lively color and expressive figures. Includes a dusting of mica across the top of the night sky.
