Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Higashiyama Sakura Zoshi" of the samurai Yamana Sozen threatening the beauty Fuji no kata, holding his cased sword against her throat as she turns her head away. At left, a young nobleman Jiro Kaja smiles as he tilts his head, seemingly unconcerned by the samurai's actions. A large black lacquer trunk or chest behind him is patterned with Genji symbols, and a lamp stands on the floor between the men. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Nakayama Ichizo I, and Onoe Kikujiro II. Nice expressive figures, with fine bokashi shading in the background.
