The 47 Ronin, Act 1: Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine: The Helmet Inspection, 1862

Comments - Great triptych illustrating Act 1 from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the kabuki play based on the famous tale of the 47 ronin. Lady Kaoyo has arrived at Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine to identify the helmet of a fallen samurai. She kneels at left as two retainers show her a helmet from among those in a wooden box nearby. Lord Moronao frowns down at her from upper right, wearing a voluminous black robe and tall court cap. Her husband, Lord Hangan sits below, his blue robe patterned with his crossed hawk feather crest. Lord Wakasanosuke watches from upper left with a sober expression, while the shogun eyes him from the center. A handsome design with colorful, expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting. Includes burnishing on Moronao's black robe and the two black caps at right.
