Nakamura Shikan II as Akaneya Hanshichi, 1831

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan II as Akaneya Hanshichi, the son of a sake merchant, reclining in a boat with a floral robe covering him. He looks up with an alarmed grimace, a black cloth wrapped about his neck against the cool evening air. A stone embankment and a wooden piling of a bridge can be seen behind him, the water gently undulated beneath the dark night sky. A great expressive figure in an interesting setting.
