Nakamura Fukusuke I as Jihizo, 1857

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Jihizo in the play "Honcho Nijushiko," a drama about two brothers quarreling over who will inherit their dead father's secret books of battlefield strategy, which have been buried in a bamboo grove. Here, Jihizo kneels in the snow holding a shovel, frowning angrily. His blue outer robe has been pushed down to the waist to reveal a red kimono with a radiating tie-dyed pattern. Bamboo fills the backgrounds and snow falls against the gray evening sky. An expressive figure in an interesting setting.
