Beauties Writing Poem Slips, 1877

Comments - Attractive scene of beauties in an Imperial palace writing poem slips, the woman at right pausing with a brush in hand as she considers her verse. Low lacquer tables on the floor between the women hold ink stones, with a white tray of sweets nearby. Glass windows on either side open onto a view into another room, where the Emperor sits on a platform with his face concealed behind a blind, a flowering cherry tree extending from the garden at left. An attractive design with an intricately detailed setting. Includes light embossing on the white kimono collars.
