Comments - Moving scene from Act 4 of the kabuki play "The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Kanadehon Chushingura), which tells the story of the 47 ronin. In Act 4, Lord Hangan is forced to commit suicide. This image illustrates the meeting of Yuranosuke, Lord Hangan's wife, Lady Kaoyo, and Yuranosuke's son, Oboshi Rikiya after Hangan's death. At left, Yuranosuke leans forward in disbelief, his eyes wide, distraught as he learns the tragic news. Lady Kaoyo smiles at him as she holds a string of prayer beads, and Rikiya carries a tray with a container of burning incense, a thin wisp of smoke rising into the air. The landscape above depicts Lord Hangan's mansion overlooking a garden and lake, framed by pines and blossoming cherry trees. From left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Bando Takesaburo I in a mitate or imagined performance. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A poignant image with expressive figures, beautifully colored and shaded, with embossing on the white kimono trim and burnishing on the black kimono.
