Angry Elder and Child Emperor, 1898

Comments - Intriguing scene from a kabuki play set during the Genpei War, detailing the battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans. A Taira nobleman dressed in formal court attire holds the child Emperor Antoku on his shoulder, a concerned expression on his face. He eyes the elderly samurai with white hair and beard at left, who grimaces angrily at the frightened young boy, whose eyes are wide. Three other noblemen dressed in fine robes and court caps watch, the fellow at upper right gesturing with his fan. Detailed with a beautiful burnished scroll design on the black robe and burnishing on the black court caps, plus embossing on the white hair and beard. A handsome illustration with expressive figures and vibrant color.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight separation at end of vertical fold at side of center panel, repaired. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
