Okaru Preparing to Leave, 1851

Comments - Interesting scene from Act 6 of the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." Kampei's wife Okaru has sold herself to a brothel so that her father will have funds to join the vendetta. Here, the proprietor Kohachi has arrived to take her away, grabbing at her arm as she backs away from him, wanting to say goodbye first to her family. Outside the doorway, one of the bearers sits in the palanquin, waiting for her to come out. The actors are Bando Shuka I as Okaru and Nakamura Kantaro I as Kohachi. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
