Beauty and Komuso, 1852

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a beauty kneeling in the street between two komuso or wandering monks, holding their deep woven basket hats in her outstretched hands. The young man at right draws a sword from a scabbard wrapped in brocade cloth, frowning with worry at his counterpart, who stares back with a worried expression as he reaches for his own weapon. The beauty grins happily, seemingly unaware of any conflict. A large black wooden tub behind her is filled with water for fighting fires, with smaller buckets perched on top beneath an angled roof. A great design with a handsome setting, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black monk's mantle and the wooden tub.
