Kabuki Characters Banzuke, 1884

Comments - Terrific Chikanobu kabuki design showing a group of kabuki actors in character with a banzuke or list of actors and crests across the top. Nikki Danjo appears at left in a purple kamishimo making a magical gesture with his hands, a scroll caught between his teeth. The warrior monk Benkei stands at top center, clutching his prayer beads in his outstretched hand and leaning on a wooden staff. The left panel includes Iwai Matsunosuke as the beauty Okaru and Ichikawa Kuzo as Nikki Danjo. The center panel features Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei, Nakamura Shikan as Matsunaga, Onoe Kikugoro as Seikichi, and Suketakaya Kosuke as Agemaki. The right panel shows Ichikawa Gonjuro as Kazuto-ani, Nakamura Fukusuke as Otohime, Bando Kakitsu as Yoriyukihachi, Ichikawa Sadanji as Yoshimoto, and Kawarazaki Kunitaro as Komachihime. A great design with lively color and wonderfully expressive faces.
