The Great Battle of Awazu Plain, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene from the Great Battle of Awazu Plain, with a samurai fighting a warrior monk in the foreground. The monk thrusts a club forward as his enemy counters with a naginata. Several smaller weapons, including a saw, mallet, and sickle, are tied to the top of the monk's personal standard waving at his back, which features a Buddhist prayer wheel design. His opponent leaps on one foot, dodging the blow, his face contorted with rage. A severed head lies on the ground below, next to a fallen samurai. At left, the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen pulls a young tree from the ground, her long black hair streaming over her shoulders. Rugged pine trees frame the scene, with a large lake visible in the distance and troops stretched out behind shields at left, firing a volley of arrows. Beautifully detailed and colored. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A dramatic image.
