Commoner Attacking a Beauty, 1874

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting a commoner attacking a beauty on a verandah. He tugs on the end of her red tie-dyed obi as she tries to free herself, tossing a packet of tissues at his head and holding onto her sash. He grimaces, gripping a sword in his other hand. He wears a gray and white patterned kimono shadowed in black, a white cloth tied under his chin. At right, a samurai watches soberly, shielding a lantern with the sleeve of his black coat. The verandah overlooks the water, with boats anchored near the shore for the night. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho, Kawarazaki Kunitaro, and Ichikawa Danjuro. Nice large figures, detailed with burnishing on the black coat and embossing on the white cloth.
