The 47 Ronin, Act 3: The Quarrel in the Palace and The Rear Gate, 1889

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych featuring two scenes from Act 3 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin, the subjects separated by a wooden fence running diagonally across the center. At left, Lord Moronao insults Lord Hangan, waving a fan in front of his face. Moronao grimaces angrily, glaring over his shoulder at Lord Wakasanosuke who stands at left, a witness to his abusive behavior. At right, Lord Hangan's retainer Kampei decides to elope with his sweetheart, the beauty Okaru, the pair shown leaving the palace with guards in pursuit behind them, the with entrance gate beyond and a blossoming cherry tree overhead. A handsome design with large figures and lively color.
