Mitate of Spring Snow, 1882

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting a mitate or imagined performance featuring a variety of characters from different plays. At left, the thief Nezumi Kozo, which translates roughly as "Little Rat Boy," stands under an umbrella, staring down with a solemn frown as snow falls heavily against the dark sky. At bottom center, the Princess Komachi looks up, gesturing with her hand, wearing a straw raincoat over a red kimono patterned with cherry blossoms. At right, the robber Ishikawa Goemon grips a sword over his shoulder, wearing a dragon print robe over his armor. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado, Ichikawa Sadanji as Nezumi Kozo, Nakamura Fukusuke as Princess Komachi, Ichikawa Danjuro as Abe no Sadato, Onoe Kikugoro as Urasato, and Nakamura Shikan as Ishikawa Goemon. Nice, large colorful figures, with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading in the background.
