The 47 Ronin, Act 11: The Discovery of Moronao, 1882

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych illustrating Act 11 from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the famous play based on the 47 ronin. The ronin have discovered Moronao cowering in his storage shed during the night attack on his mansion. He shrinks from his attackers, holding a straw bail in front of him as one of the warriors jabs at it with his spear. In the center, Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, holds a dirk, offering Moronao the opportunity to commit suicide honorably, but the coward protests. The warriors at left wears the traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robes over their armor, glaring at Moronao fiercely. A bold design with vibrant color and great graphic appeal.
