The Capture of Soga Goro, 1874

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers. Here, Soga Goro has been capturing after killing the nobleman Suketsune to avenge his father's murder. The prisoner is bound with rope around the torso, his long hair flowing over his shoulders as he looks up with a concerned expression. Shogun Yoritomo stands behind him dressed in formal court robes and yellow cap, frowning with displeasure. Two of his retainers watch solemnly from the right, both dressed in formal attire as well. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Sansho, Nakamuro Sojuro, Seki Sanjuro, and Bando Kakitsu as Nitta Shiro. An unusual subject from this classic story, rendered with lively color and large figures.
