Children Playing on a Bridge, 1877

Comments - Charming triptych of children playing on a bridge in a palace garden. The boys run and chase each other over the arched structure, laughing and smiling gleefully. At lower right, two ladies-in-waiting assist the young prince, who wears a blue coat with a dragon pattern over a white kimono tucked into purple hakama pants. At upper left, the Meiji Emperor watches from the verandah. A lovely spring scene with flowering cherry trees and a pond edges with oversized peony blossoms. Rich vibrant color, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars.
