The World at a Glance, 1879

Comments - Fantastic triptych showing the young princes of the Meiji Imperial family gathered at the palace for a geography lesson. Two young boys point at an enormous world globe as another looks up from the map he is holding. Another child picks up a book from the stack on the cloth-covered table at left as the beauty behind him gestures to the woman behind her. At right, the Meiji Empress enters the elegantly furnished room holding an open fan, surrounded by the ladies-in-waiting. The verandah opens onto a lovely view of a garden and lake surrounded by blossoming cherry trees. A terrific image with wonderful detail and vibrant color, plus fine embossing on the white kimono collars.
