Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Angry Young Samurai, 1883

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a young samurai angrily throwing his hands up as he grimaces at the nobleman Kazusa Gorobei Tadamitsu at right. The samurai wears a fine suit of armor with broken arrows protruding from it, his long hair flowing wildly around his head. Tadamitsu regards him with a sober expression as he leans against his sword. At left, Tadamitsu's wife and an elderly warrior with white hair watch the confrontation. In the distance at upper left, banners and standards of a line of approaching troops can be seen on the horizon against the dark night sky. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Kawarazaki Kunitaro, Suketaya Takesuke, and Ichikawa Danjuro. A great design with expressive faces and fine detail, including burnishing in the black vest and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
