Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Preparations of the Cavalry, 1897

Comments - Terrific design of armored cavalry troops riding in procession past an ancient pine tree. Two men blowing conch shells lead the way. Warriors follow behind on horseback, dressed in fine suits of armor, and battle helmets, their sashimono or personal standards hanging above their backs. Two samurai wear iron face masks, which give them an ominous appearance. Additional samurai can be seen faintly along the distant horizon at left. A striking composition, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the armor, and touches of embossing.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Light vertical line where backing papers meet, vertical fold at side. Slight toning and soiling, a few small spots and creases. Please see photos for details.
