View of Kameido Tenjin, 1878

Comments - Attractive scene of upper-class ladies gathered in a room overlooking the Kameido Tenjin Shrine. Elegantly dressed in colorful kimono over red hakama pants, the ladies-in-waiting relax and chat. In the center, a young girl holds a black lacquer tray of mochi cakes, while at right, another woman holds a pile of sweets on a sheet of paper. Two of the beauties make gestures like they are clapping their hands. A purple drapery with the chrysanthemum crest of the Meiji emperor frames the view of the three bridges leading over the pond. Purple wisteria blossoms hang overhead, and fill the arbor in the distance along the far shore. A few koi or carp can be seen bobbing in the water. A charming image, beautifully detailed with vibrant color, and touches of embossing and burnishing.
