Noblemen Meeting with Kato Kiyomasa, 1896

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a gathering of noblemen, all solemnly staring at the general Kato Kiyomasa in the center. The bearded daimyo holds his sword out to the side as he looks back at a young warrior wearing a green robe emblazoned with the three hollyhock mon or crest of the Tokugawa Clan. Kiyomasa's checked robe features burnishing on the black squares, with additional burnished patterns in the tall black court caps. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ennosuke as Ishida Mitsunari, Ichikawa Somegoro as Konishi Yukinaga, Ichikawa Danjuro, Ichikawa Gonjuro as Kato Kiyomasa, Ichikawa Yaozo as Maeda Toshiie, and Ichikawa Saruzo as Tokugawa Ieyasu. The background is speckled with shimmering silver mica, an interesting effect. A handsome design.
