Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yoshiwara Beauties in Spring

Comments - Charming scene of Yoshiwara beauties enjoying a fine spring day on the verandah of a teahouse, which opens onto a courtyard filled with blossoming cherry trees. At right, a young woman writes a poem slip with brush in hand, the beauty beside her wearing a black coat with a burnished pattern. A while at right a beauty kneels next to a tobacco set, a pipe in her hand. At left, a courtesan fans herself as she chats with a companion, resting her elbow on the verandah railing. The women are all elegantly dressed in fine kimono with elaborate hairstyles accented with hairpins and combs. Wonderful architectural detail in the setting and household furnishings. A beautiful triptych with soft color.
