Nakamura Shikan IV as Banzaemon and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shikazo, 1861

Comments - Great kabuki double portrait featuring Nakamura Shikan IV as Banzaemon and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shikazo in the play "Chiyo no Haru Tosa-e no Sayaate." At top, the samurai Fuwa Banzaemon looks down with an angry frown, his hand clenched in a fist. He wears a gray kimono patterned with swirling yellow thunderclouds, his thick hair pulled into a bushy upright topknot with wings on either side of his head. Below, Shikazo grimaces anxiously as he pushes up the sleeve of his blue floral kimono. Nice expressive figures set off by a softly shaded night sky.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown
