Taira Kiyomori Fighting Minamoto no Yoshihira, 1879 - Terrific scene of a battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans taking place in the snow outside a mansion. Two warriors on horseback duel with swords as their animals plunge through the snow, kicking up great clumps of snow as they ride. At left, Taira Kiyomori leans against his horse's neck as he turns to face the enemy, gripping his sword above his back. In the center, Minamoto no Yoshihira raises his weapon high as his horse rears, a determined expression on his face. Several samurai tumble to the ground as the horses trample over them, while another warrior races to catch up at right, a pole arm in hand. Snow falls heavily against the dark night sky. A great dramatic composition with expressive figures and a lively sense of motion.
