Original Sadahide (1807 - 1873) Japanese Woodblock Print
Calligraphy, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting scene of a beauty doing calligraphy on a large sheet of paper spread out on the floor of a verandah. Several women and men watch with interest as she works, while a man at left holds a completed scroll. At center right, a sumo wrestler pauses to watch, a servant behind him carrying a robe over his shoulder. A signboard is posted beneath a blossoming plum tree, and a row of clouds edges with purple separates the figures from a distance view of crowds on arched bridges on either side. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed.
