Yamakawa Shuho (1898 - 1944) Japanese woodblock print
Autumn, 1927

Series; Four Images of Women

Autumn, 1927 - Beautiful portrait of a modern beauty in autumn, with a few leaves falling down over the scene. Her hair is loosely knotted over each ear, and she wears a red shawl over a coat patterned with the suits from a deck of cards: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Her kimono is a light gray with an orange stripe, tied with an orange and black obi. The lovely subdued color palette recalls the muted tones of autumn, and the background is a softly shimmering silver gray. A gorgeous print and a classic shin-hanga beauty design. This chuban-sized version of Shuho's "Autumn" was published in 1974 by the Ukiyo-e Hanga Publishing Society, and released in a set with Hasui's "The New Eight Best Scenery of Japan" series.
