Comments - Handsome Yoshitoshi kabuki triptych depicting members of the Satsuma Rebellion in the play "Seinan unsei asa higashikaze." At right, Ichikawa Danjuro IX portrays the rebel leader Saijo (Saigo) Takamori. He sits in a wooden chair with a caned seat, dressed in a black military uniform adorned with fringed epaulets and gold braid. Next to him, Onoe Kikugoro plays Kurata Shinhachiro, resting his arm against the back of his chair, his cap on his lap. The young volunteers kneel before them to pay their respects and say goodbye. Several of the boys wear checked shirts tucked into striped hakama pants, and at far left, two stand carrying spears. Pink flames billow from a campfire at left, while tent walls emblazoned with the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma. Realistically drawn with expressive figures and fine detail in the clothing and setting, including burnishing on the black uniforms and accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone. A great design.
