Musashi, Moon over the Sumida River, No. 25 - Intriguing scene of a young woman walking the banks of the Sumida River in Edo. After moving to Edo to become a courtesan, she sent a valuable fan to the samurai Yoshida no Shosho. When he did not respond to her gesture, she went crazy, spending the rest of her days wandering aimlessly throughout the capital. Here two young boys laugh and point at the beauty as she shambles along, hunched over a bamboo walking stick. A full moon glows in the sky behind a blossoming cherry tree, softly illuminating the night scene. The inset above shows Yoshida no Shosho refusing to see her messenger. A poignant image, beautifully drawn and colored.
