Mitsuuji on an Autumn Night, 1860

Comments - Terrific scene of Mitsuuji, the "Country Genji," enjoying an autumn evening on the verandah. He sits on a cushion, leaning against a lacquer armrest, smiling happily as a young woman pours him a cup of sake. A beauty stands near the railing holding a lamp in one hand, shielding it with her kimono sleeve, which cast a shadow over a lantern sending a shaft of light across the landscape at left. Two women wait near the edge of a flowing stream at left, one giggling into her sleeve. Colorful maple leaves and pine trees frame the scene. A charming subject with an interesting effect of light, rendered with soft bokashi shading. Fine wood grain impression in the left panel.
