The Fox Lady Kuzunoha, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of a magic fox who took human as the beauty Kuzunoha to marry the samurai Abe no Yasuna. In the center, Kuzunoha and her young son Abe no Doji peer out the side of an elegant enclosed palanquin, worried expressions on their faces. The two servants carrying the palanquin have stopped, the fellow at left hopping on one foot excitedly while the man at right leans forward with an angry frown, his arms folded across his chest. The beauty's husband Abe no Yasuna appears in a circular inset at upper left, while the daimyo Ashiya Doman is shown at upper right. Autumn grasses and blossoms frame the evening sky behind the palanquin. Nice expressive figures in a handsome setting.
