Series; Outer Chiyoda Palace (Chiyoda no on-omote)

Kemari (Football) - A lovely Chikanobu depiction of a party of Edo elite beneath the blossoming cherry trees in spring. Two wealthy lords compete in a game of football called kemari in which they kick the ball back and forth to one another, trying to keep it aloft. Another nobleman stands nearby, playing referee to their match with a fan in his hand. Their loyal retainers watch quietly from their seats beneath the striped tent walls at left. A fascinating subject, beautifully colored and finely printed. Nicely detailed with cloth embossing in the white tent stripes and burnishing in the black court caps. A great choice for a collector.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached, backed with paper. Some soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
