Grabbing a Beauty by the Hair, 1880

Comments - Dramatic kabuki design of the rogue Kurobei grabbing a prostitute by the hair, ready to attack her with the large knife in his hand. He yanks her off balance, pulling her backwards as she struggles to free herself, clutching at her ponytail. At left, a beauty watches with a smile, waving the sleeve of her black print kimono. An enormous bolt of red and yellow lightning flashes across the dark night sky behind them. From left, the actors are Iwai Hanshiro as Osen, the wife of the Ebiya Shop owner, Onoe Kikugoro, and Ichikawa Sadanji as Tokubei. A fantastic image with large expressive figures, fine detail in the hair and faces, and a burnished checked design on the purple obi.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28"
