Kwanu Passes Five Barriers, 1853

Series; A Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Kwanu Passes Five Barriers, 1853 - Terrific Kuniyoshi design illustrating a scene from the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a historical novel about the three warring kingdoms in 3rd century China. Mounted on horseback at the foot of the bridge at left, the great leader Kwanu receives the surrender of Soso and his followers. Two retainers bow humbly and drape a fine robe over the glaive extended by the proud warrior. Soso rides a dappled horse at right, his hands clasped before him in an act of submission, surrounded by his groveling men. A royal carriage waits on the opposite shore with Kwanu's guards gathered around. Nice expressive figures with wonderful detail in the exotic costumes, horse equipment, and weapons. A great Kuniyoshi triptych and a great choice for a collector interested in this historic tale.
